Engineering Services/Nuclear:

Configuration Management

MPR's Nuclear Experience
MPR has worked with several utilities to establish systems for establishing an effective
configuration management system. These systems include defining the scope of documents requiring
configuration control, improvements to computer systems used for trading configuration information,
as well as modifications to the engineering and plant processes which implement configuration
changes. The MPR approach is based on our intimate understanding of the impact and use of
configuration information on the operation, maintenance, and design of power plants.
Configuration Management Experience
Specific experience in the area of Configuration Management includes the following:
- Review plant modification control process to assess its effectiveness in updating and controlling
design configuration and design basis documents
- Develop criteria and methods for identifying the configuration content of documents which
pertain to the operation, maintenance, and engineering support of a nuclear power plant.
- Analyze and develop a computerized system which provides plant configuration information,
design information, and serves as a controlled index for design configuration and design basis
documents.
- Prepare interactive, computerized interface to place operation and use of configuration
management information in the hands of engineers responsible for plant design, operation, and
maintenance.
- Develop an accurate cross-reference between design drawings and installed plant equipment.
This will assist the design engineers in the preparation of modification packages.
- Develop a cross-reference between documents containing licensing basis information and the
supporting design basis documents to facilitate accurate and complete licensing impact assessments
and licensing document verification activities.
- Evaluate advanced document retrieval and search techniques, using full image searching and
computer imaging systems, to improve identification of affected documents in configuration control.
- Review, update, procure, verify, and cross-reference vendor technical documents to plant
equipment.
- Develop effective and efficient processes for performing plant walkdowns necessary to verify
the configuration of plant systems and components. Collect nameplate data for those components within
the scope of the project.
- Provide technical oversight to ensure that a Master Parts List development activity has the
requisite capability to cross-reference, and properly maintain equipment in accordance with the
applicable design basis and configuration documents.
- Develop training for Engineering and Operations personnel in the methods and procedures
developed for Configuration Management and Design Basis Reconstitution.
Recent Developments
MPR is actively involved in the development of computer systems to support the utility needs in the
area of configuration management. Our on-going relationship with the vendors of equipment and
programs in this field provides direct access in resolving system problems and improving operation.
